The Alphabet Files Project, or TAFP for short, is a multi-media musical design
project that, in the first instance, combines music and creative design concepts.
It was conceived on a bus journey between the XTY Housing Community and
Wenzhou-Kean University, Wenzhou, China, sometime early spring semester in 2022.
What began as an experiment writing names with the notes in a DAW
piano roll editor in order to “hear what they sounded like” quickly snowballed
into something bigger and more challenging.
Thus, the TAFP was imagined.
Once the parameters for creating the alphabet had been decided, the task of
coming up with a coherent, workable tool was swiftly put into action by the
design team (trapecista). After extensive trialling, the alphabet was officially
launched in July, 2022.
The alphabet was created to function as a Musical Creativity Generator (MCG) and follows a series of basic instructions.
1 – The user first decides how they will use the alphabet.
The first volume in the series by Amateur Beauty is a straightforward A-Z with 26* randomly chosen words selected using: https://randomwordgenerator.com. At the time, considering the random nature of the project, this seemed a fitting methodology to adopt, however, text of any kind can be attempted and users are only limited in what they can do by their own imaginations.
Future projects could be based on names, poems, quotes, newspaper headlines, movie scripts, one letter, the lyrics of your favourite song or a recipe from a cook book you love and, of course, alphabets in their thousands.
2- Once the script has been selected, the next stage is to pass it through the MCG. The corresponding chords (3 notes per letter) are extracted:– in Volume 1 this was done by writing the corresponding chords in a DAW piano roll clip (Ableton Live 11 – default 4/4, 120bpm). The chords the word provides are the basis to the piece of music you will create. The creative process begins when you begin to mould and shape the music in the 3rd and final stage of the process.
3- From here on in, it’s all fun and games. There is only one rule, there are no rules. Add chords/notes, erase chords/notes, use notes instead of chords, play in reverse, duplicate sections, change tempo, change instrument, play a chord on a percussion instrument, play a complete word or project on a percussion instrument, use plug-ins, themes and motifs, play with audio effects and add splatterings of imagination and dollops of creativity.
The MCG can function on numerous levels and its use is in the hands of its user. In is most basic format it can be used to give initial inspiration to new piece of music or, used to its full potential, provide the motivation to complete a musical project and add it to The Alphabet Files Project library**.
